Devotion

A few years ago, when I was going through tough times both in terms of my finances and career, I needed to take a take an urgent decision. I waited for long periods of time with little or no success. While I was still pondering on this, I went to a prayer meeting where there was a quiz competition being held. I answered a question correctly from the Bible and a dear sister (who has fully dedicated to God) came to me with a gift and gave it to me. In my curiosity, I opened the gift pack and found a beautiful plaque with the above Bible Word on it. I regretted then and there for my thoughts to take a decision instead of waiting upon the Lord. The Lord with His loving kindness interrupted my plans and prompted me once again through the word to wait upon Him. Further, He did not take much time to rescue me from my building project in India and also blessed me with a job. Therefore, I know practically the necessity for the Christian people to wait upon Him.

However, we are accustomed for instant behaviour and wanted to see everything happen in real time. We just knock the door, and if it does not open, we walk away instead of waiting at the door in anticipation of the door opening. I think this generation lacks an essential quality of waiting upon the Lord. In this tech world, people are restless, and they want to see everything happen in no time. Further, most of us do not know that God is not interested in our time but His timing.

Waiting is much harder than walking. Waiting requires patience, and patience is a rare virtue. It is fine to know that God builds hedges around His people for their protection and say to them to wait in there. It is a terrible mistake for us to break through God’s hedges. It is a vital principle of guidance for a Christian never to move out of the place in which he is sure God had placed him. Remember, until the Pillar of Cloud moves; you don't move. We hear a great deal about waiting on God. There is, however, another side to this. When we wait on God, He is waiting till we are ready; when we wait for God, we are waiting till He is ready. To wait is not to sit with folded hands, but learning to do what we're told.

There are some people who would say, and much more who would believe, that as soon as we meet all the conditions, God will answer our prayers. They say that God lives in an eternal now; with Him, there is no past nor future; and that if we could fulfil all that He requires in the way of obedience to His will, immediately our needs would be supplied, our desires would be fulfilled, our prayers answered. There is much truth in this belief yet it expresses only one side of the truth. While God lives in an eternal now, yet He works out His purposes in time. A petition presented before God is like a seed dropped on the ground. Forces above and beyond our control must work upon it, till the real fruition of the answer would be given.

The question often comes, “why didn't God help me sooner? It is not His order. God must first set you to the trouble and cause you to learn your lessons from it. His promise is, I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honour him. He must be with you in the trouble first all day and all night. Then, He will take you out of it. This will not come till you have stopped being restless and fretful about it and become calm and quiet. Then He will say, “it is enough and further waiting is not required”.

What's next?

Today, I want to encourage you to wait on the Lord. Whether you have a financial decision to make or a decision regarding your family or a decision about your fellowship with saints, do not attempt to do so without spending time with God. Now to me this is the most precious time of all, waiting to see what God is going to do. Lamentations 3:25 says, “The Lord is good unto them that wait for Him, to the soul that seek Him”. God bless you during your waiting.
